CONSIDERATIONS IN CHOOSING A PUPPY
The professional breeders of Iowa Pet Breeders Association want you
to have a positive and life-long experience with the breed you choose to make
a part of your family. We suggest you do research before you purchace a
puppy so your new family member will be appropriate for your particular lifestyle. Remember, this is a commitment that can last from 8 to 18 years and we want your new pet to be happy as well as your family.
Ask yourself what your needs are. Do you want a lap dog or one who will go on long walks with you. If you have children, obviously you need a breed that will be gentle and sturdy. Other pets? Some breeds are not "dog or cat friendly". Do you mind a dog that sheds or would you prefer a non-shedding dog. Some dogs require regular clipping or more frequent grooming. Will you be able to afford a good quality pet food, periodic vet check-ups and vaccinations?
What ever your preferrences or circumstances, a puppy can be a wonderful addition to any household. Remember to be prepared and responsible. Ask the breeder or pet store questions and do some research.
On behalf of IaPBA, we hope you enjoy your new puppy.
